Privacy policy
Nightlife Compass (nightlifecompass.com) is a directory of nightlife venues with contributions from members and from the businesses themselves. This policy explains what we collect, why, who sees it and what you can do about it. It is written in plain language on purpose; where the law needs specific words, counsel will add them without changing the meaning.
1. Who we are
Nightlife Compass is operated by a single operator (legal entity and address to be inserted). Contact for anything in this policy: the contact page or privacy@nightlifecompass.com.
2. What we collect
If you only browse: server logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested, time) kept for security and to keep the site running; the city you choose or that we detect (see section 4), stored in your browser only.
If you join: the name you choose to show, a home city, your email address, and the date you joined. We don’t ask for a date of birth; you confirm you are 18 or older.
If you post: the content itself — text, photos, video, the place and city it refers to, the time you posted, and any replies or “useful” marks. Photos and video may carry embedded metadata such as location and device; we strip it on upload where technically possible.
If you claim or add a business listing: your name, role, business email and phone, the proof of authority you offer, and the listing details you submit.
If you book an arranged night in Tijuana: lead traveler name, email, phone, party size, dates, pickup point, and any accessibility or dietary notes you choose to share. Payment card details go directly to a payment processor and never touch our servers.
3. Why we use it
To run your account and show your posts under your name; to review new members’ first posts and business claims before they publish; to make and manage bookings and pass the provider what they need to run them; to answer your messages; to keep the site secure and detect abuse; and to meet legal obligations. Legal bases where required: performance of a contract (accounts, bookings), legitimate interests (security, moderation, keeping listings accurate), consent (location, optional notes), and legal obligation.
4. Location
On the home page we ask your browser for your location once, to pick the nearest listed city. The answer is used in your browser to choose a city and is not sent to us or stored by us; only the chosen city name is kept in your browser’s storage. If you decline, we fall back to your time zone or show everywhere. Change the city any time from the selector.
5. What is public
Your display name, home city, join date, and everything you post or reply are public and may appear in search engines. Your email address and phone are never public. Business claimants’ names and roles are not public; the “claimed by the business” mark is.
6. Who else receives data
Hosting, email and payment providers acting on our instructions; the venue or operator whose product you booked (name, party size, notes, pickup point); and authorities where the law requires it. We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers. If we ever run sponsored placements they will be labelled and will not use your personal data for targeting.
7. Cookies and storage
We use only what is needed to sign you in and remember your choices (city, filters). No third-party advertising cookies. Analytics, if added, will be privacy-preserving and aggregated, and this section will say so.
8. Sensitive information
Accessibility and dietary notes are optional, used only to run the booking, and shared only with the provider concerned. Don’t post health, sexual or other sensitive information about yourself or anyone else; we remove it when we see it.
9. How long we keep it
Account data for as long as the account exists and 30 days after deletion. Posts until you delete them or the account, except where a copy must be kept for a legal claim. Booking records for the period required by tax law (typically 5–7 years). Server logs 90 days. Rejected claims and rejected posts 12 months, so repeat attempts can be recognised.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live you can ask for a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its use, port it, or withdraw consent. Deleting your account removes your profile and unpublishes your posts; replies you made on others’ posts are anonymised. Write to privacy@nightlifecompass.com; we answer within 30 days. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority.
11. Children
The service is for adults (18+). We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18 and remove accounts we discover to belong to minors.
12. International transfers
Our providers may process data outside your country. Where that happens we rely on recognised transfer mechanisms (to be specified by counsel for each provider).
13. Changes
We will post changes here with a new date and, for material changes, tell signed-in members before they take effect.
